Aries the Ram is associated with the element fire and the planet Mars. Aries has several correspondences, most notably with the Egyptian god Amon and, in Greek mythology, the tale of the golden fleece, sought by Jason and the Argonauts.

Rivers' painting explores a colour palette of suitably fiery reds, oranges and yellows over a hazy azure skyscape punctuated with clusters of agitated brushmarks. The four main stars: Hamal, Sheratan, Mesarthim, and 41 Arietis are rendered in gold leaf. This broiling and overheated scenario, scattered with ashes and glowing coals makes for an almost apocalyptic effect.
