This painting deliberately challenges a simple interpretation. The moon is rising, or sinking, it is night or day. There are waves or maybe undulating countryside. Thin silver lines of metallic paint shape them, whatever they are. The painting requires the viewer to move in order to pick up the silver reflections. Yet the painting is calm and still.
