The Wildlife Trusts X: Rothbury

Artwork Portal Stand: 413

This was the tenth artwork created as part of The Wildlife Trusts project. The project lasted just over a year and involved us travelling around England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, visiting 53 Wildlife Trusts reserves, across 20 separate Trusts.

This work is the heart of the project in my view. Firstly, it’s the largest (140 x 100cm) but it is also trying to capture the state of our planet. We visited the most exciting and newest Wildlife Trust reserve, Rothbury (in Northumberland), and saw a fallen silver birch tree. It was still alive, as most of it’s roots had managed to stay in the ground. Just like the planet, it’s in a lot of trouble, but is fighting on and if we do the right things it’ll be fine. There is also an ancient fort and a cup and ring stone at Rothbury, and on the right of the picture you can see those links to the past forming a line from the fort through the stone (which was carved up to 6,000 years ago) and onto the rings on the roots of the tree. We owe it to our ancestors and future generations to restore this planet.
