The January sky shouldering a gruel light

Paula Dunn Stand: 924
The January Sky Shouldering a Gruel Light is a rich, atmospheric painting that captures the muted, wintry light of the moorland. Low, heavy clouds weigh upon the landscape, allowing only the faintest traces of light to filter through and creating a brooding, almost otherworldly atmosphere.

Built up with layers of oil paint, the surface is richly textured, echoing the marks and traces etched into the land by weather and time. A striking flash of gold leaf cuts through the sombre palette in the middle ground, suggesting a road, or a passing train catching the light on an otherwise dark and heavy day. This unexpected glimmer draws the eye into the painting, offering a fleeting sense of movement and light within the vastness of the northern moorland.
