Making Worlds: Producing as Creative Practice

Artists are often at the centre of cultural conversations, but contemporary art and culture are shaped through collective processes. Producers, writers, commissioners, editors, curators and cultural organisers all influence how ideas are developed, understood and remembered. Manchester has long been a city of makers. From its industrial heritage and independent publishing to music, broadcasting and contemporary art, the city has been shaped not only by creative ideas, but by the people and infrastructures that make those ideas possible. In this spirit, the panel asks: What does it take to build a sustainable contemporary art ecosystem'not just remarkable artworks and exhibitions, but the conditions that allow artists, organisations and ideas to flourish? Bringing together leading voices from contemporary art, journalism, broadcasting and international cultural organisations, the discussion explores producing as a creative, critical and relational practice'one that shapes not only how art is realised, but whose stories are told, how they travel across borders, and how cultural ecologies are sustained. Drawing on their diverse experiences across exhibitions, publishing, filmmaking, public broadcasting and international collaborations, the speakers will reflect on the relationships, infrastructures, mentorship and acts of care that underpin contemporary art today. Together, they will consider how producers, writers, artists and cultural leaders work collectively to build meaningful platforms for artistic practice, cultivate new audiences and create opportunities for future generations. Rather than looking behind the scenes as spectators, this conversation invites audiences to rethink producing as a form of collective cultural authorship'one that shapes not only how art is experienced today, but how creative communities and institutions evolve over time.
