Born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, John Button grew up on England’s east coast. He studied Architecture in Brighton before working across exhibition design, interiors and illustration. After moving to Sweden with his young family, he began painting and exhibiting more extensively. His work is now represented in galleries across Sweden and the UK, as well as in France, the USA and Japan.

John’s paintings explore landscape, seascape and still life through pattern, texture and memory. Rather than following conventional perspective, he builds compositions from shape, mark and colour, allowing a sense of place to emerge gradually. His subjects are often drawn from the everyday: an uncleared breakfast table, an upturned boat on a shingle beach, or the remembered landscape of a childhood walk.

Working primarily in acrylic on plywood and MDF, John builds and distresses the surface through repeated layers. Charcoal, crayon, oil pastel and other materials are introduced instinctively, creating paintings that move between abstraction and recognition. Familiar forms—a mug, vase, boat or jetty—often surface from the marks, giving the work its distinctive balance of spontaneity, structure and observation.
