Bert Yates

Manchester Academy of Fine Arts Stand: 302
Bert Yates is a Manchester-based painter whose work explores the overlooked beauty of urban landscapes and the unexpected presence of nature within them. Previously inspired by walks across the Pennine moors, a knee injury prompted a shift towards the neglected wastelands closer to his home in Ancoats.

Among discarded objects, resilient wildflowers and encroaching vegetation, seemingly unremarkable spaces become subjects rich in visual possibility. Through drawing and painting, Bert reveals the character and quiet fascination of places often passed by without a second glance.

Born in nearby Miles Platting, his work also reflects a sense of nostalgia, connecting personal history with the changing urban environment.
