Charlotte Flemming
Charlotte Flemming is a Devon-based artist whose practice spans drawing and painting, united by her distinctive use of white ink and dip pen. She trained in Fine Art Illustration at City and Guilds of London Art School, graduating in 1993, and has been a practising artist ever since.
Working intuitively without predetermined sketches or outcomes, Flemming allows her compositions to evolve organically, beginning with pools of ink or washes of colour that guide the direction of each piece. Her works are often created on a large scale, some reaching up to two metres, combining dark, atmospheric backgrounds with ethereal white ink, floating gold pigments, and shards of glass to evoke depth and light.
Deeply inspired by nature, particularly the hidden and submerged worlds beneath the sea, her imagery draws on the forms of jellyfish, corals, and sea urchins. These intricate, lace-like creatures emerge from the darkness of her canvases, fragile and luminous. In recent work, Flemming has expanded her practice to incorporate textures formed through the chemical reactions of pigments and inks, creating crackled surfaces that suggest fragility and transformation.
Her studio, surrounded by oak trees in rural Devon, offers a constant source of inspiration, from the quiet depths of the sea to the stillness of the forest. Flemming’s art invites viewers to pause and look closer, discovering beauty and complexity within the natural world.
