Ian Judd

The Sculpture Gallery Stand: 518

Ian has spent over forty years sculpting, including works commissioned by public bodies and private individuals and has produced work across a full range of materials; clay, plaster, stone, bronze and other metals, concrete and cast stone. Ian is member of the Royal Society of Sculptors and Manchester Fine Arts Society.

His first studio in Leeds was at the Olympia Works in Roundhay, now Tesco. He is now back sculpting in Leeds after many years of commuting to a studio in Dean Clough Mills, Halifax.

Born in London he left school and got a job in the Civil Service and then worked for nearly ten years advertising studios. At almost 30 he decided to go to art school to learn how to paint, only to discover his true passion for sculpture with a in particular interest in public art.

His work has appeared in public spaces as diverse as the pictorial gates for Leeds Trinity at Bank Street to the statue of J.B. Priestley near the Bradford Media Museum.

"Generally I feel my work has been about identifying problems and providing answers. And so what you see here are the results, sometimes but not always after much trial and error.

When I get an idea, I like to let it find it's own way. Style, material, finish, things like that. I try not to impose my leanings on it. Inevitably, this results in a body of work with many seemingly unrelated pieces. " Ian Judd
