Drawing lies at the heart of Julia Midgley’s practice, extending into etching and larger works on paper developed from sketchbook observations. Drawing on influences ranging from ancient sculpture and folk art to artists including Goya, George Grosz and Paula Rego, her work explores eccentric characters, personal narratives and metaphorical imagery.
Documentary drawing and reportage are central to Julia’s practice, capturing people, places and events through direct observation. Previous artist residencies and projects include Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Granada Television, Liverpool Biennial, Liverpool Cathedral and the excavation of Chester’s Roman Amphitheatre, reflecting a longstanding commitment to recording life as it unfolds.
