Kehinde Badmus
Kehinde Badmus (b. December 14, 1996), born Badmus Kehinde Qudus in Alagbado, Ogun State, is a Nigerian visual artist currently based in Lagos. A versatile impressionist, Badmus is fluent in oil, acrylic, and charcoal, and draws his inspiration from the everyday rhythms of life around him.
His formal training began at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, where he earned a National Diploma (ND) in Painting in 2018. That same year, he was recognised as the Best ND Student in Painting, an award sponsored by the eminent Nigerian painter Kolade Oshinowo. This early accolade became a pivotal moment, giving him the confidence to pursue his practice more seriously. Badmus returned to YabaTech to complete his Higher National Diploma (HND) in Painting in 2023.
Working primarily with water-based acrylics, Badmus employs flat brush layers to build up his canvases with vibrant, expressive colour. His process embraces immediacy—placing colours side by side with minimal mixing—to create heightened contrast and intensity. This technique, rooted in the principles of impressionism, allows him to capture the essence of his subjects with energy and spontaneity rather than strict detail.
Central to Badmus’s work is his fascination with human facial expressions. He views expression as a vital form of body language—one that conveys emotion, identity, and story without the need for words. Through bold brushstrokes and luminous palettes, he not only records what he sees but amplifies what he feels, inviting viewers to connect with the character and vitality of his sitters.
Badmus’s growing career has already attracted recognition. In 2022, he was a Top 10 Finalist in the National Undergraduate Art Competition organised by Fobally Art World. The following year, in 2023, he was shortlisted among the Top 7 Finalists in the Art for Change Competition. His work continues to feature in group exhibitions and contests across Nigeria, marking him as an emerging voice in the contemporary art scene.
With each canvas, Kehinde Badmus demonstrates the power of colour, gesture, and emotion to reveal the richness of human experience—making his art both deeply personal and universally resonant.
