The Sculpture Gallery Stand: 518

In September 2020 after nearly 40 years following a career in the commercial world, I left his job to become a sculptor. I'm at the start of a new career experimenting to find what I love doing the most and developing my ideas and imagination.

Stone is at the heart of what I make, its hardness, colour, texture and imperfections dictate a lot of the creative process either as a block he imparts his ideas upon or as a unique stone that guides his ideas. Carving stone is hard work but I love it, often getting lost for hours in the rhythms and feeling of unity between mind, hands and the material, a world away from what he had been used to.

So far, my work is gravitating towards two themes: faces and forms.

On faces,  “There is something magical when a face starts to emerge from a piece of stone and its features, expression, and mood take shape and develop over time with each carving action.” And on forms, “I like to take inspiration from natural shapes (shells, flames, fish, mammals, flowers etc) and the action of natural processes such as erosion and develop ideas and forms that have balance, simplicity and elegance”.
