Tim Pearce

The Sculpture Gallery Stand: 518

Whilst quite consciously referencing a cubist aesthetic, Tim Pearce’s sculpture springs from a responsiveness to such diverse sources as modular forms in nature, the abstract qualities of industrial machinery and the architecture of Frank Gehry.
This is characterised by a purity of rhythmical structures explored through geometric dislocations, the free association of convex and concave planes and the articulation of negative space; a preoccupation with the crisp contradictions and teasing ambiguities generated by the play of light and shadow across glazed ceramic surfaces.
In terms of technique, the ceramics are all slab built by draping clay over or inside improvised formers, cutting and joining when leather hard and eventually glazing to stoneware temperatures. The 2 larger tower pieces in this exhibition were made in sections before assembling on rods and have been brought in from garden locations.
The Artist lives in the village of Warthill, east of York, where he has a studio devoted to painting as well as sculptural ceramics and is a member of Leeds Fine Artists. Recent solo shows have taken place at Pocklington Arts Centre, The University of York, York Hospital and the City’s Blossom Street and Village Galleries.
