Susan McCall

Landscape is a dominant theme throughout my life and my work reflects this continuing fascination.
Sketchbook drawings, made whilst walking, capture the moment and these spontaneous studies form the basis for the paintings.
The paintings are an expression of the feeling of being in a place, of the experience of the elements - light, space, colour and texture. The dramatic effects of natural light and atmospheric seasonal changes are sublime and allow pure pleasure in paint.
The smells of bluebells, heather and hawthorn, bracken and earth; the sounds of bees, grouse, curlews and skylarks combine feelings and physical experience to create rhythmic, energetic and gestural fluidity in paint.
