Peter Macaulay

Manchester Academy of Fine Arts Stand: 302

Peter Macaulay explores the double reality of painting, where an image exists both as a representation and an object in its own right. Drawing inspiration from artists including Roger Hilton and Francis Bacon, alongside classical sculpture, theatre and cinema, his work brings together seemingly unrelated references to create unexpected and often absurd narratives.

Combining unconventional materials with expressive colour, fluid lines and strong underlying geometry, Peter's paintings feature fragmented figures, playful contradictions and deliberately unresolved forms. The resulting work is ambitious, irreverent and often humorous, balancing visual tension with a distinctive sense of joie de vivre.
