Julian Lees
With a career spanning five decades, Julian’s practice is an ongoing exploration of “the experience of looking.” Trained at Manchester Polytechnic and responsible for coordinating the Pre-Degree Foundation course at Blackburn College in the 1980s, Julian brings a profound, academic rigor to his expressive art.
His signature style is a multi-disciplinary approach to drawing and painting, highlighted by an innovative combination of graphic and photographic media. His work focuses on two key strands: the life model and notions of landscape, both informed by his extensive travels.
Julian’s Philosophy:
“My interest is in choices how what and why we select ideas and objects to represent the world we live in. I collect material primarily through the process of looking/drawing finding images that connect with my thoughts and feelings.”
