Prince Obasi
Prince Obasi (b. 1981) is a contemporary figurative painter whose practice bridges tradition, individuality, and imagination. Based in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Obasi has cultivated a distinct visual language that makes his work instantly recognisable.
Obasi studied at the renowned Yaba College of Technology in Lagos, where he earned his Higher National Diploma (HND) in Fine Art, specialising in painting, in 2009. Following his graduation, he dedicated several years to teaching visual art in colleges, sharing his knowledge and inspiring younger generations. In 2019, he shifted his focus fully to painting, establishing OBASISM STUDIO in Port Harcourt, where his practice continues to evolve. He is also an active member of the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA), Rivers Chapter.
Working primarily in acrylic and charcoal, Obasi has developed a personal style that is both playful and thought-provoking. His figures are immediately identifiable by their square-shaped eyes and pupils—a signature motif that reflects his unique vision of human expression. These altered eyes, at once quirky and profound, invite viewers into a deeper dialogue with the characters he portrays.
Equally striking are the intricate details within his canvases. Obasi invests meticulous care in the rendering of attire, jewellery, and surrounding environments, transforming each painting into a vivid narrative scene. His works not only capture likeness but also illuminate personality, emotion, and cultural presence.
Obasi’s art can be seen as both celebration and exploration: a celebration of human character through vibrant imagery, and an exploration of how small visual shifts—such as the reimagining of the eye—can reshape how we perceive identity. His paintings are joyful yet layered, offering audiences an open invitation to look closer and discover meaning within the details.
