Sophie Derrick
Sophie Derrick, born in 1984 in the UK, is a contemporary artist based in Wiltshire, England. She earned her BA Hons in Fine Art from Leeds University in 2008 and completed her MA Fine Art at Wimbledon College of Art, University of the Arts London, in 2012.
Derrick's innovative practice merges painting, photography, and sculpture. She begins by applying impasto paint directly onto her skin, and then photographs the painted surface. These photographs are subsequently printed and further manipulated with additional layers of paint, creating a dynamic interplay between the painted subject and the photographic image, blurring the boundaries between reality and representation, that question the concept of self and identity.
Derrick has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions globally in addition to Art Fairs including Scope Miami, Pulse Miami, and the New York Art Fair, and regularly exhibits at major London fairs. Her work has been recognised with accolades, such as being shortlisted for the BP Portrait Award and The Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Prize, and exhibiting at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
