Caroline Locke
Caroline Locke is a UK-based international artist known for her innovative sound sculptures and immersive installations that connect audiences to the natural world. Working across disciplines, she combines art, science, and technology to transform environmental data into multisensory experiences. Through her research-driven practice, Locke captures the subtle frequencies of trees and other natural phenomena using custom-built recording devices and software. These recordings are translated into sound works and sculptural instruments - bells, tuning forks, and digital tones - that reveal the hidden rhythms of our natural environment.
Recent and ongoing works include The Major Oak Projects (Nottingham Castle, 2025), The Frequency of Trees (Yorkshire Sculpture Park, ongoing), The Tree Charter Bell, and Significant Trees, created in partnership with the Woodland Trust, RSPB and the National Trust. These evolving projects use environmental data and organic materials gathered from trees cast in bronze as a method of preserving both form and memory. Through these works, Locke invites audiences to listen differently, encouraging a deeper sense of connection to time, growth, and the changing natural world.
