Jo Clements

Salad Stand: 120

Jo Clements is a visual artist working between studios in Manchester, UK and Donegal, Ireland, interested in the intersections of materiality and cognitive science and how complex artworks might activate different neural pathways and cognitive flexibility.

Through textiles, sculpture, drawing and digital media, she investigates new modes of understanding and connections through combinations of incongruous, unrelated imagery, textures and objects.

Hugely influenced by speculative fiction, neurology, psychology and biological networks her images and sculptures of brains are reimagined as plant like structures living outside of a human shell – an obsessive motif that permeates her work and her attempts to imagine potentialities for interconnectedness.

Jo's work is sensorial, tactile and often tongue in cheek, embracing a mix of the serious and the absurd, the embodied and the ambiguous.

Jo holds a Fine Art practice-based PhD and was the overall winner of the Greater Manchester Arts Prize in 2018.
