Kay Shah

AWOL Studios Stand: 123
Kay Shah is a British-Pakistani artist based in Manchester, working across painting and installation. Drawing on patterns and motifs from Pakistan, they bring these references into dialogue with the spatial restraint of Western minimalism. They create surreal, dreamlike worlds featuring recurring architectural structures that suggest movement and transition, alongside abstract geometric figures caught between states of being.

Their practice explores how cultural inheritance, memory and place shape identity and belonging. Rather than treating identity as fixed, Shah’s work considers how it is continually negotiated through the cultures we inherit and the spaces we move through.

Shah is a member of the Manchester-based artist-led collective DMZ and works as a curator, developing exhibitions and collaborative projects. Their work has been exhibited across the North West, including Castlefield Gallery, HOME, The Portico Library, Saul Hay Gallery and Bury Art Museum. Their immersive installation Degrees of Duality, presented at Castlefield Gallery, explored bicultural identity through the interplay of architecture, pattern and domestic space. Their commissions span cultural and commercial contexts, including projects for Selfridges & Co. and Castlefield Gallery.
