Lotti V Closs B.1987, Whitstable. Lives and works in Stockport, studio holder at Paradise Works in Manchester since 2022. Studied BA fine art at Nottingham Trent 2006-2009 and MFA Sculpture at West Dean 2012-2014, has exhibited across the U.K, and in Mexico City as part of the Architectural Association Visiting School in 2016.
Closs’s work hinges upon a meditative, playful approach to making, filtered through a distinct surrealistic language. Initial influences range from patterns in the natural world to architectural presence, theatrical fiction or everyday objects; personal moments of observation that spark indistinct yet tangible associative imagery in the artist. This approach opens to both material and personal influence, allowing elements of abstracted thought or memory to create a springboard or subconscious environment for the physical work to evolve in. Combined with developed material processes, that are often centred within the immediacy and intimacy of the handmade, works begin as partial elements, composed and altered through a series of balanced reactions, accumulating a discernible nature or motif that manifests through a tentative conversation between artist and material process.
