Mathew Wayne Parkin

Abingdon Studios Project Space Stand: 228

Mathew Wayne Parkin is a sodden artist, suspicious writer and sometimes researcher, born in Wakefield and based in the North of the UK. Working primarily with moving image, they work across installation, writing, sculpture and programming.

Their work borrows from archives, language and everyday materials to explore queer histories, class, sex and intimacy, and the ways we record, remember and misremember one another. They work with DIY methods and queer crip approaches, with a particular concern for accessibility.

Their work is like an armpit: personal and intimate, of the body and relationships, smelling earthy.

Parkin's work has featured in group shows and screenings including at PAKT, Amsterdam; Embassy Gallery, Edinburgh; Workplace Gallery, Gateshead; and Tramway, Glasgow. They have had solo projects at Cubitt Gallery, London; The Tetley, Leeds; Grand Union, Birmingham; Glasgow International, Glasgow; and IMT Gallery, London. They were shortlisted for the LUX Scotland Margaret Tait Award (2021), and have previously been selected for the Experimental Moving Image Residency at Cove Park (2021), International Residency at Triangle-Astérides, Marseille (2020), and Graduate Fellowship at Glasgow Sculpture Studios (2018).
