Harminder Judge

The Sunday Painter Stand: 211

Harminder Judge (b.1982 Rotherham, UK) creates transportive sculptural works that simultaneously reference Indian neo-tantric painting and the abstract expressionist and colorfield movements of the 20th century. His alchemical process involves layering pigments into wet plaster, followed by extensive excavation through sanding, polishing, and oiling to create gleaming, vibrating surfaces with monolithic forms and emanations of color. The resulting modular panels and wall-mounted shapes function as "portals" rather than traditional paintings, offering viewers a contemplative plane to look through. His practice is deeply informed by a formative teenage experience participating in his grandfather's funeral rites in Punjab, where themes of physical and spiritual transformation—material becoming immaterial—became central to his artistic philosophy.
