Craig Coulthard is a painter from Fife, and is based in Manchester. The works we are showing is a collection of paintings that could appear to be relics, mysterious and timeless. They place contemporary and anachronistic elements in unlikely conversations, situated in compositions recontextualised from Japanese woodcuts.
The work explores:
– imagined conversations
– a collision of imagery from across time and space
– Japanese woodcuts, Pictish stones, cars, landscapes
– fragments of history, rearranged
– moments that don’t make sense
– symbols and eras colliding
– cropping and restaging of imagery
– echoes of the past in new formations
– timelines bending, breaking, folding
– artefacts out of place
