Georgina Barney

Primates Stand: 233

Georgina makes colours from plants: dyes, inks and paints. These are embodied in tactile objects made very, very slowly: from a gifted fleece of British grown wool to found skirting boards and discarded hessian sacks. Process is everything: Georgina’s practice is entwined with teaching and testing; her artworks evolve from systems of creating colour which minimise decision-making. At the centre of the artwork is the experience of touching and looking at colour.

Georgina is based at Primary contemporary art complex in Nottingham where she oversees a dye garden and teaches plant-dyeing. Key commissions, exhibitions and awards include: ‘Nature’s Palette’ at the Barber Institute, University of Birmingham (2023); ‘Sheep Sketchbook: Revising the Pastoral Tradition’ at the Attenborough Arts Centre, University of Leicester (2014) and an Arts and Humanities Research Council award for ‘Curating the Farm’ (2010).
