Line Nilsen
Line Nilsen (born 1985) is a Norwegian artist, designer, and hand weaver currently based in the UK. Her creative practice is deeply rooted in craft and process, exploring the interplay of material and colour to produce contemporary woven art.
Nilsen’s woven pieces serve as an emotional canvas, reflecting memories of the land she left behind. Growing up in the Arctic landscape of Norway, Nilsen felt a profound connection to the land, and its extreme variations of light and nature continue to influence her work. Through her art, she paints the colours and textures of her childhood experiences, creating a dialogue between the past and her present.
With exceptional skill in hand loom weaving, Nilsen’s creations feature subtly complex and innovative patterns crafted from an array of materials, including linen, cotton, wool, and paper. Her unique process involves painting sections of the warp before weaving, allowing light, colour, and texture to emerge in a way that blurs the lines between painting and weaving. The delicate textures of her weaves invite tactile engagement, enriching the viewer's experience. Her technique is self-taught, building on her professional training in ikat dyeing and traditional textile making.
Nilsen graduated from the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham in 2009 and further honed her weaving skills by designing interior textiles for a global clientele. Since 2016, she has focused on creating one-of-a-kind hand-woven textile art, taking on bespoke commissions and collaborating as a design consultant from her Nottingham studio. Her practice seamlessly navigates the realms of art and design through the ancient craft of weaving. Nilsen's work has been showcased in prestigious galleries and art fairs, including Beam Editions, London Craft Week, Collect Art Fair, and London Art Fair. Her work is featured in private collections across Europe, Asia & the US.
