Poppy Erwood
Poppy Erwood creates a world of hybrid beings brought to life through printmaking, ceramics, mask-making and photography. By combining motifs of female figures and animalistic imagery as symbols of womanhood, her collages form unexpected juxtapositions and question themes of gender.
The idea of play, alongside Erwood's background in theatre and dance, influences her hybrid and performative approach. Inspired by both the Surrealists' favourite game of Exquisite Corpse and the queer cabaret dancers of Berlin's Weimar Republic, whose metamorphic personas act as symbols of deviance and celebration, Erwood reimagines and assembles figures in a world where identity is fluid and constantly becoming.
