Sarah Harrison-Greaves

AWOL Studios Stand: 123
Sarah Harrison-Greaves is a Manchester based, mixed media artist working primarily with clay. Her practice explores the relationship between the body, material and process, and how we organise ourselves and relate to one another, both individually and collectively.

Working through touch, gesture, repetition and play, Harrison-Greaves allows forms to emerge intuitively through making rather than working towards a predetermined outcome. She is interested in how the physical process leaves traces within the material, recording an encounter between body, material and moment.

In her current ceramic work, Harrison-Greaves uses free-building to develop forms intuitively, bringing individual parts together into complex, sometimes unsettling structures. Lines applied through monoprinting with coloured slip cross the surfaces, referencing the boundaries and systems through which we organise ourselves collectively. These marks suggest frameworks that appear fixed but can become blurred, disrupted or crossed.

Through the construction and disruption of forms, Greaves explores what happens when established structures break down, and how new ways of relating to one another might emerge.

Harrison-Greaves has exhibited extensively across the UK and received Arts Council England funding for her work. Her previous projects have explored themes including motherhood, cultural identity and personal expression, combining material experimentation with research and lived experience. She was the recipient of the Whitbread Young Arts Achiever Award in 2005 and a finalist in the Aesthetica Creative Works Annual in 2012. Her work has received national and international media coverage, including two interviews on BBC Radio 4, and has been published in books and journals internationally.
