Tony Wheeler

AWOL Studios Stand: 123
Wheeler’s work is an amalgamation of his environment, blending borderline surrealist tendencies with a deep fascination for the natural world. Based in Manchester, he earned a Fine Art degree from Manchester Metropolitan University and a post-graduate diploma from the Cyprus College of Art. After years of defining his style while balancing a full-time career and family, Wheeler has established a robust practice, exhibiting internationally and participating in the art&York mentoring programme.
Growing up tech-free in the Worcestershire countryside, Wheeler spent his childhood foraging, climbing trees, and witnessing nature's brutal, daily battles for survival. Today, living near Manchester's Bridgewater Canal, he still finds solace in the forest, captivated by magical pockets of water and the possibilities of the hidden worlds within them. This enduring connection to shifting landscapes heavily informs his artistic perspective.
When entering the studio, the natural world is his primary impulse—an effort to bring the outdoors inside and fully immerse himself within it. Yet, life’s inevitable hardships and anxieties naturally bleed into the creative space. By cross-referencing these dark realities with environmental themes, Wheeler weaves intricate narrative structures into his work. Permeated by a vein of dark humour, his multi-layered paintings and drawings expose the strange, overlooked possibilities of our own world, tracing an emotional journey of growth and survival within the unseen understory of life.
