Carly Gilliatt
Carly Gilliatt is a contemporary artist from Lincoln, UK, creating intuitive, expressive abstract paintings. Through uplifting colour, gestural mark making and rich texture her work captures the dynamic energy and feeling of the landscape.
My work explores the quiet transformative moments I experience in nature and the freedom and possibility I find in the process of painting.
I work intuitively with no fixed plan but may have photos and drawings around me. The paintings develop through mark making and layering. This is an explorative, playful process that brings me a lot of joy, Happy to experiment in paint, I’m excited by the possibilities of what could happen – all the different layers give the paintings a rich texture and history, surprising unplanned marks and so much more to discover close up.
It always begins with the landscape, not as a fixed image but as a lived, felt experience – a walk along the shore, a shift in light. These are the moments I try to translate, not just what I see but what transforms me while I’m there.
Making my biggest paintings this year has brought greater freedom to my work, my marks and movements becoming more expansive. This exhibition includes some of my largest and smallest works and celebrates my love of colour from soft, subtle harmonies to vivid bold contrasts.
