STRAVINSKY'S THE FIREBIRD

Gabriella Smith Violin Concerto: How To Be A Bird
(World Premiere - Hallé Co-Commission)
Thomas Adès Asyla
Stravinsky The Firebird: Suite (1919)
Thomas Adès conductor | Pekka Kuusisto violin
Thomas Adès guides us through his first concert as our new Principal Guest Conductor. 30 years after it was premiered by the Hallé in 1996 to celebrate the opening of The
Bridgewater Hall, we once again perform Thomas Adès’ ‘elegantly funny’ These Premises Are Alarmed. Gabriella Smith constantly seeks to bring us closer to nature and How To Be A Bird, performed by one of today’s most compelling artists, Pekka Kuusisto, explores unmapped ground. We round out the evening with Stravinsky, whose breakthrough ballet The Firebird introduced 1910s Paris to his homeland’s snow-fresh fairy stories.

ELGAR'S SYMPHONY NO.1
Thomas Adès ... but all shall be well
Berg Violin Concerto
Elgar Symphony No.1
Thomas Adès conductor
Christian Tetzlaff violin
Light shines through the darkness in music exploring loss and consolation, conducted by Thomas Adès.
… but all shall be well is an affecting meditation in remembrance of Adès’ grandfather. Berg’s heartfelt Violin Concerto mourns the passing of 18-year-old Manon Gropius, the daughter of Alma Mahler, a central figure on the musical landscape of the early 20th century. Christian Tetzlaff will give us an emotionally vivid interpretation of the piece. Elgar’s First Symphony was premiered by the Hallé in 1908. Full of unforgettable melodies, it radiates tenderness and elation.
