Red Dog is an artist led, peripatetic, project space for artwork that explores site, history and gender.
At the Manchester Contemporary, Red Dog is showing Now You See Me; Ghosts and Monsters, a body of work by Celia Johnson that explores ideas of looking and being looked at, play and trace in relation to personal and industrial histories of the Black Country.
Informed by archival photographs of Guy Motors in Wolverhampton where her grandfather was a track fitter, the work draws on Celia’s memories of growing up in the Black Country as well as her current experience of the contemporary industrial processes, architecture and communities of work at the Industrial Park that occupies what remains of the original factories of the vehicle manufacturing company.
2D and 3D work references residues and traces of the past, embracing the discarded and left behind to consider gender, vulnerability, masking and play.
