Gate Cottage Collection

Stand: 610

Step inside the garden at Gate Cottage, a picturesque garden set within a quintessentially 1723 English cottage located in Kent, the Garden of England.

The Gate Cottage collection was photographed in situ using natural light and coloured backgrounds intended to remove the flowers from their natural habitats and focus the eye and attention on their unique shapes and textures.

I wanted to capture the fleeting nature of the flowers, look beyond their surface beauty, and create an oasis of calm for the eye to wander and contemplate. I’m inspired by Karl Blossfeldt’s microscopic details, the fragility of Irving Penn’s flower photography, the minimalism of Robert Mapplethorpe’s compositions, and the boldness of Marimekko’s textiles.

A little about me...

Four years ago, my husband and I decided to put down roots in Kent to escape the fast pace of London life. Thanks to the lockdown, what started off as a weekend home has evolved into a full time residence. We inherited a mature, cottage style garden that was planted 60 years ago. At first, I started to document the flora in the garden to record the various blooms popping up around me. At the end of summer, I realised I had a lot of photos to play with and started to print them on cards, and fabric. My friends loved how the photography took on a new life and it became a way to enjoy summer all year long. I’m an ex advertising creative director from New York City where I worked with fashion and luxury brands for over 20 years.  I have a degree in Clothing and Textiles, am an avid photographer, have a passion for flowered jackets and love beautiful cakes. My mom is also an amazing gardener and her garden was always the envy of the neighbourhood.
