Will Teather is recognised for a singular painterly language that combines technical precision with a vividly imagined visual world. Working across figuration and narrative image-making, Teather’s practice explores memory, mythology, psychological theatre and the legacy of historical painting through a distinctly contemporary lens.
His work has been exhibited extensively in the UK and internationally, appearing in more than 200 exhibitions and art fairs. Recent presentations include exhibitions with Artrooms London, Artwars Miami and Norwich Castle Museum, alongside selection as a finalist for the London Contemporary Art Prize. Teather’s paintings have achieved notable commercial success, including record-breaking sales for events such as The Other Art Fair, and his practice has been supported through numerous grants, awards and bursaries.
His work is held in public and private collections internationally, including Colchester Museums, Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums and the municipal street-art collections of Marijampole, Lithuania and Sheptytskyi, Ukraine. Teather’s practice has also been featured in a range of international publications including Wall Street International, Grazia, Artists & Illustrators, The London Evening Standard, The Artist Magazine and The Antiques Trade Gazette.
Raised in the English countryside and immersed from an early age in books on historical painting, Teather developed a lasting engagement with art history before refining his contemporary practice through periods of study at Central Saint Martins and Chelsea College of Art.
After establishing his studio practice in London, Teather first came to wider prominence in 2007 when he was selected from an international field of applicants as the inaugural Artist-in-Residence at Aberdeen Arts Centre. He subsequently undertook a three-year residency with the Anteros Arts Foundation in Norwich, where he subsequently established a permanent studio in the city’s cultural quarter.
In 2012, as recipient of the Ruth Katzman Scholarship, Teather travelled to New York to participate in the Vytlacil Campus Artist-in-Residence Program. He has since been the Artist-in- Residence for Norwich Arts Centre for a number of years and is currently an Associate Lecturer at Norwich University of the Arts.
