“Yoneda used a Kodak Brownie camera. She imagined that when one spy first meets another, there must be a sense of ambiguity and uncertainty—you don’t know whether the other person is one of your own. The words they exchanged have been preserved, and it is said that they actually met at that location. But is that really true? There is an ambiguity to the facts.
“They were spies, but they also had families, and perhaps parts of their lives were quite ordinary. Even so, there were things they couldn’t tell their families. Yoneda wanted the photographs to express how everything surrounding the spies was fuzzy. She wanted to make the images feel almost like apparitions; she didn’t want them to be too sharp.
“Photographs taken by spies at the time still exist, and most of those, too, are blurry. Yoneda looked at photographs and examined spy-related materials in museums. As she researched, she brought together everything she came to understand and chose the approach that seemed best. But she thinks The Parallel Lives of Others may be the only series she photographed that way.”
