States of Formation
Ceramic
The collection in total is 29cm x 40cm.
These ceramic pieces were constructed through free-building, allowing the forms to develop without a predetermined outcome. The works emerged through the coming together of individual parts, responding intuitively to the material and to one another. This process reflects my interest in collective structures and the ways separate elements can come together to create something connected yet unstable.
The forms are intentionally ambiguous and at times uncomfortable, resisting an immediate sense of order or resolution. I am interested in the social boundaries, systems and frameworks we rely on to create stability and collective understanding, and what happens when these structures are challenged, pushed or broken.
The lines across the surfaces were created through monoprinting with coloured slip. These marks reference the societal lines and boundaries that organise and hold us together collectively. They suggest structures that appear fixed but can become blurred, disrupted or crossed in unexpected ways, leaving us vulnerable when the frameworks we depend upon no longer hold.
The work therefore moves between construction and disruption, connection and separation, order and uncertainty. The act of bringing the pieces together becomes an attempt to reconstruct something after its boundaries have been challenged, to find new forms of connection within what has been disrupted. Rather than presenting a resolved structure, the works remain precarious and open, reflecting the ongoing process of negotiating how we exist collectively.
