The concept of the siren has long been tied to danger, seduction, and power—figures who use their allure to captivate and control. Traditionally depicted as female, my painting reimagines this myth through the lens of queer history, inspired by George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, and his relationship with King James I. Villiers was a master of charm, rising to influence not only through his connection with the king but also alongside his formidable mother, Mary. His story mirrors that of a siren, his voice and presence luring him into the highest circles of power. This narrative, often overshadowed in history, has recently been brought into the spotlight through the series George and Mary. It is one of many lost queer tales that deserve to be seen and remembered. Through paint, I seek to revive this forgotten history with a contemporary perspective. The title, Triton Noir, pays homage to France, where Villiers honed his skills of persuasion and seduction, reinforcing the timeless nature of power, love, and desire.
