This work is one of a new series that explores political associations of pattern and the ways that seemingly decorative or familiar surfaces can signal ideas about privacy, control and permission. The pattern comes from a domestic net curtain, something that sits between inside and outside: preventing outsiders from looking in, but also marking a boundary for those within. In that sense, it becomes a kind of threshold between public and private space. The neon text introduces another threshold. **NO SPITTING, NO SWEARING, NO SINGING** are instructions found on prison visiting-room walls, a space where the private encounter between inmate and visitor takes place within a highly surveilled, controlled public institution. I am interested in these as spaces we inhabit, and in the less visible socio-political mechanisms operating beneath their surfaces: who can look, who can enter, how we are expected to behave, and who gets to decide.
