Monogatari continues Karen Knorr’s approach from Fables (2004–2008) and India Song (2008–2010), exploring animal life alongside cultural heritage. This series turns to Japanese history and mythology, placing animals within the refined architectural settings associated with The Tale of Genji, the celebrated novel by Heian-era court lady Murasaki Shikibu, written in the early 11th century.
