Written in Blood (BUMBOY)

‘Written in Blood (BUMBOY)’ is a mixed media work created
in 2020 in the aftermath of a performance at NIAMOS in Manchester,
where the artist revealed a wound on their chest that said “BUMBOY”.
Inspired by Boris Johnson and his refusal to apologise for his use
of the homophobic slur, when referring to homosexuals as “Tank-
topped Bum Boys”. Canavan sought to not only reclaim the word in an
act of protest and defiance, but also to become the “BUMBOY” of
Johnson’s nightmares. The piece is a clear testament to their
resolve and commitment in making artworks that speak of lived
experience, trauma, reclamation and the strength to endure.
