Big Girl: Take Up Space

Manchester School of Art Stand: 122

Coco's inspiration for Big Girl (2025) came from a poem written by Stephanie Burt called, ‘For Lindsay Whalen’ (2006). Unfortunately, it was the only piece she found about a sportswoman in a sea of content about sportsmen. This inequality sparked a fire and made her determined to create something so powerful, you have no choice but to pay attention. Starting with the way Burt describes Whalen’s skill as smooth “like a breeze”, she created a series of images displaying basketball players’ physical and mental strength, each printed in bright risograph ink. Big Girl takes up the space that she has earned and deserves.
