Burning A Rubber Glove, 2025

Paradise Works Stand: 212

These recent works reflect a merging of landscape and figure. Working with compact square canvases, my approach to landscape has been readapted to accommodate forms. As the location of my practice moves away from the rural north, metropolitan elements seep in, taking the form of solid gloomy objects that reduce recurring motifs into simple flat shapes. Heaps of Sheeps II pushes a motif that reoccurs in other works. The image of a bundle of wool sprayed with a red spot overwhelms its setting, with landscape elements taking shape within a tangle of lines and textures. Homer, and Moving the Steam Engine painted very recently, have their senses of place removed. Central forms sit in textured greens and browns substituting the rural settings of previous works for signalling colours. Wooden furniture, fresh vegetables and children’s toys become building blocks that haunt an artificial space.
