Garniture of 5 Vessels with Ormalou Mounts

Flamm x Auction House Stand: 104

Bridgette Ashton is a multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, printmaking, drawing, and publications. Her work examines collecting, the nature of collections, and the boundaries between the real and the artificial. Through engagement with objects, places, and archives, it begins to reveal layered histories and offer new ways of seeing the familiar.

Garniture of 5 Vessels with Ormalou Mounts is a reimagining of the historical practice of refashioning imported Chinese porcelain with gilt-bronze fittings to suit eighteenth-century European tastes. In this work, cardboard and artificial silver leaf replace the traditional ormolu, implying opulence while revealing materiality and means. It reflects on how such adornments transformed objects into opulent yet fabricated versions of themselves, questioning authenticity, taste, and transformation.
