Ruth Murray’s paintings are rich in detail, mysterious and unsettling. Interested in the experiences of women and the spaces they occupy, Murray probes what it means to present public and private personas. She is especially interested in water and associated ideas of reflection, as well as what lies beneath – or the sense of a deeper spiritual realm lurking under the surface.
This piece draws particular inspiration from Anne Carson’s The Glass Essay — a profound work that explores the nature of the soul, and feelings of grief and loss.
