Little Washroom

Flamm x Auction House Stand: 104

Cast directly from the landscape and often working against the tide, Eleanor Turnbull’s works are pieces of land that have been extracted and presented, sometimes without bones, without mother-moulds, suspended over pipework as if drying or sunk into smooth backgrounds.

Eleanor is a sculptor and gardener based in West Cornwall. Specifically, she is a mould-maker, adapting and inventing processes to cast outdoors in the elements. Material and site are her collaborators – where do materials want to flow, and how much will the tide uncover? She is drawn to rockpools, potholes, puddles and mounds – land phenomena that form natural boundaries between terrain and material through forces of attraction. She casts to feel connected. This process is one of curiosity and vulnerability, where she explores themes of identity, extraction and detachment, the ethics of collecting and desire. The mould-cavity becomes a metaphorical void tempting us to explore our complicated relationship to the land.
