So Long And Thanks For All The Fish

Flamm x Auction House Stand: 104

Stuart Robinson works predominantly within a sculptural practice, often utilising elements of installation, moving image and performative events. The work explores the potential of materials to further narrative contexts, with the making and journey of the works an important part of the practice. Personal experience and histories, with elements of common, shared experience, form the catalyst of the ideas.

Recent works have had a focus on exploring childhood experiences of seaside holidays, and the objects, locations, journeys and landscapes key to these. The works present an opportunity for contemplating loss, nostalgia and landscapes of fun – as well as the ways in which we seek joy and escape from the everyday – while celebrating the excitement and uniqueness of these sites.

So Long And Thanks For All The Fish is a body panel from a Volvo 340 skewered by an oversize ceramic chip fork. The Volvo 340 was a key antagonist in childhood journeys and has featured prominently in previous work as a personal talisman of Stuart’s experience of holiday journeys.
