Liverpool Biennial is delighted to present ‘My Mommy Is Beautiful’, 1997/2018, a limited edition print created by artist Yoko Ono. A key figure in both the Fluxus and Conceptual Art movements of the 1960’s and 1970’s, Yoko Ono (b.1933, Tokyo, Japan) continues to work across a broad range of disciplines and media, including music, performance, and installation.
This work relates to her participations in the third edition of Liverpool Biennial, which was ‘My Mummy Was Beautiful’, 2004. It consisted of the widespread distribution of intimate images of a woman’s body featuring a breast and vulva across Liverpool. It was featured at more than twenty public sites, on carrier bags, banners, car stickers, and at Liverpool John Lennon airport, named after Ono’s late husband. The art could be argued to be a tribute to the physical strength and perseverance in motherhood. However, the project can be linked thematically with many earlier works by the artist that present an objectified and dislocated view of the body.
