ANN CARRAGHER (Lives and works Blackpool). A visual artist, researcher and facilitator. Her research explores the concept of liminality (physically and psychologically) in relation to borders, thresholds and cultural identity.

Carragher presents works that weave together notions of loss and lament, by exploring the ambiguous and elusive qualities that manifest physically and psychologically in the intersection between space, place, mobility and memory.

This current work is shaped by what Brady & Collins (2013) describe as “future imaginaries and potential virtues,” with the Fylde Coast hinterland acting as both site of interrogation and source of inspiration. I regard Blackpool as an archaeological site of popular culture; a reliquary of fetishistic and transitory artefacts fused with natural and artificial imaginaries. In this sense, the town becomes a space of fragments, relics, and prophecy—inviting both pleasurable and lamentable visions of possible futures. This perspective also draws on Blackpool’s historic role as a kind of pilgrim trail for pleasure and leisure.
