GARTH GRATRIX- (b.1984, lives and works Blackpool). Gratrix makes work along an oscilating horizon line where the formal and the frolicsome interact. Using self-imposed measurements rules to create sculptural forms and instalations that connect ideas of queerness with assumptions of space and how we inhabit it. They are interested in the clandestine nature of relationships, visual and coded methods of communication and wordplay as environments to enliven and complicate the quotidian of work, life, and leisure.
They have exhibited alongside artists including Bruce Asbestos, Sunil Gupta, Jonathan Baldock, Rafal Zajko, Ro Robertson, Harold Offeh, Lubaina Himid, Helen Cammock and Rene Matic.
Gratrix is a Clore Fellow with artworks in UK and international collections. Most recently works have been acquired through V&A Purchase Fund and Contemporary Art Society on behalf of Grundy Art Gallery- following their major solo show, Flamboyant Flamingos feat. Derek Jarman and Felis Gonzales-Torres. 2024. They have been an artist in residence at Hospitalfields, Scotland; Towner, Eastbourne; Projekstron Normanns, Stavanger, Norway; and apexart, Manhattan, New York.
ON DISPLAY: The two artworks at the fair offer a scenario where two things meet. One of personal lived experiences of born again christianity, pearl necklaces and dropping to ones knees. The other of refinement, reflection and shyness in the application or adornment of facets of ones identity.
